FG trains 50 lawyers in oil and gas law

The Federal Government will today (Monday) in Abuja, commence a three-day training workshop for 50 selected lawyers from the Ministry of Justice in oil and gas law.The workshop, organised by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Bello Adoke, in collaboration with the Institute for Oil and Gas Law, Abuja, is intended to position lawyers in the Ministry of Justice to give effective legal advice on oil and gas matters to the government.The President of the Institute for Oil and Gas Law, Mr. Niyi Ayoola-Daniels, told journalists that Nigeria was at a huge disadvantage in the prevailing situation whereby the multinational oil companies singlehandedly draft legal agreements in joint venture projects with the Federal Government.Ayoola-Daniels said, "Most of the issues in the oil and gas sector are determined by the multinationalsthe revenue of the nation is being frittered away when there are no indigenous contributions in drafting agreements."The Attorney-General of the Federation is moving to stem the tide by ensuring that the international oil companies do not have monopoly in drafting oil and gas sector agreements.""When you dont have expertise in that field, you would only make do with what the IOCs give you," he added.
