Sambo decries sentiments in politics

Published by Punch on Mon, 28 Nov 2011

Vice- President Namadi Sambo has described the use of primordial sentiments to further the ambitions of some politicians as the bane of Nigerias growth and transformation. He, therefore, called on politicians to thread the path of patriotism and peaceful coexistence.Sambo made the call when the Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Mr. Dan-Iyan Misau, visited him in Abuja on Friday. The Vice-President used the occasion to call on politicians to give government the maximum support to transform the society. He said the government was happy with the support from the ACF and believed that very soon, there would be lasting peace and development in the North in particular and the nation in general.Sambo appreciated the forum for organising a peace and unity conference at this time when efforts should be geared towards ensuring rapid growth and development of the nation. He also told the ACF of the resolution of President Goodluck Jonathan and himself to give it all the needed cooperation to ensure development in the North which ultimately translates to development of the nation.Sambo urged the forum to task the clerics, politicians and traditional institutions to ensure the realisation of the cohesion of the North. He said due to the importance attached to the conference by the government, he had to call off his scheduled trip to Kenya which coincided with the conference. The vice-president used the occasion to outline the programmes of government and its intended destination, highlighting some of the proposed incentives, especially as they relate to agriculture and the construction of fertilizer blending plants. He said government was ready to waive any duty on the importation of items for the production of fertilizer and promised a five-year tax holiday to any entrepreneur that partnered the government in ensuring the siting of the six plants at the six geo-political zones.Earlier, the ACF chairman explained to the Vice-President the proposed conference scheduled for December 5 and 6, 2011.Misau commended Sambos efforts at solving critical issues that affected the North. He particularly commented on the issue of Almajirai (itinerant) Education and espoused the efforts of the vice-president in that regard.
