Aregbesola identifies need for community-based associations

Published by Tribune on Mon, 28 Nov 2011

Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has identified community-based associations as agents through which rapid development could be brought to the communities .The governor said this in Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government Council Area of the state at the launching of the N100 million development fund.He said government as the primary agent of development needed the people's assistance to develop their communities. He explained that coming together of sons and daughters of a community has sociological and economic effects on the community and the state .'One of the ways to bring rapid developments to our community is through community-based associations. In the past, the major development used to come through help from community associations; schools, hospitals and town halls were provided through community associations. Many of our leaders went to school through community associations which gave them scholarships and it is good that these are being revived.'This is not an advocacy for government to abdicate its responsibilities. The government is still the primary agent of development and the people must always look up to it to perform its responsibilities,' the governor said.Aregbesola noted that his administration has included Iragbiji in its developmental programmes, 'the community is benefiting from our flood control programme; it will also benefit from new public schools being constructed across the state and it will benefit from our massive urban renewal and road construction.'Speaking at the event ,the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola who is an indigene of the town, said that the significance of the event was to harness effort of the indigenes and of well-wishers to support its drive for the economic development of the community and the state , stressing that government alone could not provide everything for the community.Speaking at the event, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Najeem Salaam, appealed to the people of the community and residents of the state to support the government in power and be patient with it to be able to deliver its electoral promise , that the administration of Aregbesola will achieve its desired goals of developing the state. The Aragbiji of Iragbiji; Oba Abdul-Rasheed Olabomi urged the people of the community to key in into the programme of the government, and desist from destroying government property and as well ensuring their environment was kept clean.
