Uduaghan tasks scholars on conflict resolution

DELTA State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has charged scholars in the country not to stand aloof when their communities are burning but that they should serve as instruments of conflict resolution whenever there is strife in their areas. The governor, who gave the advice while launching a book written by Prof. B.I.C. Ijomah titled: Nigerian Nationalism and Socio-Political Interaction and another book dedicated to him by Prof. M. O. Gasiokwu, titled: Law and Diplomacy in Contemporary Nigeria, urged the academia to be seriously involved and map out strategies for prompt resolution of conflicts. According to a statement, Uduaghan urged the scholars to use their exposure in the academic world to intervene in conflicts and nip them in the bud to enable peace, unity and development reign in their clans. The governor, who described internal crisis as detrimental to development, also enjoined scholars to constantly visit home so that they would be abreast with realities in their states. Launching the two books with N10 million on behalf of the state government, Uduaghan described them as legal instruments that would assist in the effective administration of any state. He said some chapters in the two books are so useful that the State Executive Council would read them before discussion on any issue.He enjoined commissioners to take the books as their companion. Stressing the importance of the books, the governor said: 'The two books are very central to robust debate in any State Executive Council meeting and commissioners who do not have the books will not be allowed to participate in any discussion. In fact, we shall always read some chapters in the book before decisions will be taken on any programme'. Uduaghan described Prof. B.I.C. Ijomah as an erudite scholar, knowledgeable, a patriot, honest and one who has contributed immensely to the development of the state. Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, described Ijomah as an academic giant who has contributed immensely to literature and research. He recalled how Ijomah traversed some countries to raise books for University of Nigeria Nsukka not only to sustain academic excellence in the university but also to attract students and accreditation.
