NFC Championship Game 2015 Final Score, Highlights from Packers vs. Seahawks

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 19 Jan 2015

What. A. Game.Raise your hand if you guessed Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson would combine to throw six interceptions in the NFC Championship Game. Nobody' Shocker.Wilson was horrific for 55 minutes before leading a drive in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to put his team ahead. A field goal by the Green Bay Packers sent the game to overtime before Wilson was able to finish off the magical comeback, winning 28-22.FiveThirtyEight'sNeil Paine tweeted how quickly things changed for the defending Super Bowl champs:NFL.com's Michael Silver was blown away by both sides:We know the end result, but how did we get there' Below, you'll find all the important highlights from what can easily be considered one of the top NFL games this season.HighlightsThe action began with the first drive of the game. After receiving the ball first, the Packers marched right down the field to the Seattle 29-yard line. Rodgers threw two incompletions, one short to Davante Adams and another deep to Jordy Nelson, before deciding to try for Adams again in the back of the end zone.Rodgers, who hadn't thrown an interception since Dec. 14 (and just two total since Week 9), decided to challenge Richard Sherman. It didn't go well for Rodgers:The Seahawks ran a handful of plays before Wilson threw an interception to Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, giving the ball right back to Green Bay. Rodgers again moved the ball well before stalling at the 1-yard line. Rather than going for it on fourth down, head coach Mike McCarthy elected to let Mason Crosby kick the chip-shot field goal.On the ensuing kickoff, the Seahawks coughed it up yet again. Doug Baldwin was the culprit this time:Again, the Packers stalled at the 1-yard line. Crosby kicked a cupcake field goal to put the Packers up 6-0. Getting two scores off turnovers early in the game was huge for the Packers, but faltering multiple times on the 1-yard line proved to be detrimental. Converting even one touchdown would have spelled the end for Seattle.A three-and-out by the Seahawks put the ball back in Rodgers' hand. Eddie Lacy fought for 14 yards, and Richard Rodgers made a big catch in the middle of the field to set up a 13-yard touchdown to Randall Cobb, who was wide open in the back of the end zone. The lead was 13-0, but Crosby had more to bring to the table. On the Packers' first possession of the second quarter, Crosby booted a 40-yard attempt to push the score to 16-0. The rest of the quarter was rather uneventful, though Wilson did toss his second and third interceptions of the half. You can view two of the three, both by Clinton-Dix, below:Down 16-0 at the half, Seattle had its back against the wall. CenturyLink Field was nearly silent, as the 12th Man wasn't sure how to react to such a poor outing from Wilson. Wilson wasn't the only problem offensivelybig drops by Baldwin and an inability to get open by Jermaine Kearse didn't help remedy the problembut Wilson was the one making quantifiable mistakes. The crowd livened up a considerable amount midway through the third quarter. Seattle was finally in field-goal range, and head coach Pete Carroll sent Steven Hauschka out to convert a 38-yard attempt. What happened next was unpredictable. It was also the spark the Seahawks desperately needed:Garry Gilliam, a rookie offensive lineman, was on the receiving end of punter Jon Ryan's 19-yard floater. Everybody loves a big-man touchdown, and the 302-pounder was undeniably the happiest guy on the field. The anticipation was killing him, as he later revealed:The opening drive of the fourth quarter resulted in yet another Crosby field goal, this one from 48 yards. All hope appeared lost for the Seahawks when, with five minutes, 13 seconds left on the game clock, Wilson coughed up his fourth pick of the contest. Fans began to leave:But a three-and-out by Green Bay put the ball back in Wilson's hands, and he was ready to make something happen. He tossed a 26-yard floater along the sidelines to Marshawn Lynch that was originally ruled a 35-yard score before the officials overturned it, and that helped set up a one-yard run by Wilson to put six points on the board. Hauschka converted the extra point, making it 19-14.It was time for the onside kick. Entering the game, Hauschka was 1-of-4 in said attempts in his career. He made it 2-of-5:Brandon Bostick, the Packers player who botched the kick, missed the ball because it went through his hands and struck his helmet. Naturally, the Internet had a field day with the occurrence:The Seahawks finished the incredible comeback on a 24-yard rushing touchdown from Lynch. Up 20-19, Carroll made the smart call to go for two. Wilson looked to be out of options while scrambling out of the pocket, but he heaved a floater to the opposite end of the field, where tight end Luke Willson grabbed it and waltzed in to convert. Clinton-Dix had an opportunity to bat the ball down but was unable to make the play. The Packers' grittiness kept them alive, however, as yet another field goal from Crosby knotted the score at 22. A game so compelling just had to go to overtime, and it did.Overtime didn't last very long. After backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson won the coin toss for Seattle, Wilson went to work. The team ran three plays, converting one first down along the way, before a 2nd-and-6. Wilson went deep down the right side to Baldwin, who snared it out of the air to finish the 35-yard gain. Not to be outdone, Kearse wanted a 35-yarder of his own. This one was the game-winner:All four of Wilson's picks in the game came on failed attempts to Kearse. That was also Kearse's only reception of the game. Weird things happen in the NFL.This game was one for the ages, as the best football was saved for the final 10 minutes or so of play. Rodgers and the Packers were the better team. The defense frequently smothered Wilson, the top running quarterback in football this season. Wilson was unable to get going on the ground until late in the game.Perhaps the New England Patriots will take something from the Packers' game plan. They'll play Seattle in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1 in Glendale, Arizona. The Seahawks didn't play like NFC champions Sunday, but their determination and their unwillingness to accept defeat show they can take down even the best competitors. It's safe to say the Patriots will be their toughest challenge yet.Follow Kenny DeJohn on Twitter: @kennydejohn
