Kogi: INEC creates 4,444 polling points

Published by Punch on Tue, 29 Nov 2011

The Independent National Electoral Commission has created 4,444 polling points out of the existing 2,548 polling units in Kogi State for the purpose of the December 3 governorship elections. The decision, according to the INEC, was taken to reduce the congestion noticed during previous elections. This was contained in a statement by the commissions Director of Information, Mr. Emmanuel Umeger, in Abuja, on Monday. He explained that the commission was adequately prepared for the conduct of the governorship election in Kogi State. As part of preparations for the elections, the commission said it had 7,973 ad hoc staff for the election in the state. The statement said, "Kogi state has a total of 2,548 polling units. In order to speed up the voting process, 4,444 voting points of 300 voters each have been created. "This would facilitate the voting process and help forestall the incidence of long queues at the polling stations during the election. "Following the conclusion of the recent continuous voter registration in the state, 1,333,312 registered voters are expected to vote during the election. "Nineteen candidates are contesting the governorship election. "While assuring the good people of Kogi State of its readiness to conduct free, fair and credible governorship election, the INEC hereby calls on the electorate in the state to embrace the peace and conduct themselves in an orderly manner during the election."
