Abattoir, Agege residents decry lack of street lights

Published by Tribune on Tue, 29 Nov 2011

LagosResidents of Tabon-Tabon, Oja Oba, Abattoir and other areas in Agege Local Government area of Lagos State have called on the state government to repair street lights on old Abeokuta road, linking Abattoir and other communities with Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.Community News learnt that the damaged street lights were installed during the tenure of former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. However, the people living in the area have been complaining about the darkness brought upon them because of the lack of street light. Some of the residents who spoke to Community News lamented that men of the underworld were now capitalizing on the prevailing darkness in the area to forment trouble.'It is now common for armed robbers and other dangerous men to wreck havoc on innocent residents of the areas. Armed robbers operating on motorcycles popularly known as okada have been operating freely on the streets, dispossessing passengers of their property,' Alhaji Hamed Tijani, a resident of Abattoir told Community News. Also, a trader, Mrs. Toyin Ayinla, in the area, lamented that bad boys often capitalised on the darkness in the area to cause havoc.'We are always in fear in this area due to the darkness. We appeal to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to come to our aids by ensuring that the damaged streets lights were fixed on time. We always close our shops around 7:00 p.m. everyday due to darkness'.When Community News visited the street, some of the electric poles had fallen down, while some evil men had vandalised some, carting away the cables.
