Published by Tribune on Tue, 29 Nov 2011

The Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA), at the weekend, fumigated the Customs Barracks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and distributed 2,000 insecticides treated mosquito nets to hospitals and residents of the barracks. The National President of COWA, Hajiya Sa'Adiya Dikko, at Karu Customs Quarters' Clinic, said the exercise was part of the association's contributions to riding the country of malaria.'Malaria is a very serious disease that if we cannot prevent it, we should try as much as possible to make sure we reduce the number of people who are dying from the disease.'This malaria campaign, which includes the fumigation of our barracks and the distribution of insecticide treated mosquito nets, is another demonstration of our commitment to total wellbeing of Customs family and the community around us.'The national president promised that the association would try to sustain the programme by making it a yearly campaign.Dikko advised beneficiaries of the items to use them and keep their environment clean, to avoid malaria disease.'As you have heard from the experts, malaria is one of the highest killer diseases in our society.'The good news is that malaria is preventable just by keeping the environment clean and sleeping under mosquito nets.''Mr Onyenka Ofurum, the National Coordinator, War against Malaria Initiative, commended COWA for the initiative, adding that it was a comprehensive campaign that went beyond merely talking on the pages of newspapers.Ofurum said the COWA initiative was important as it touched the lives of both members of the association, their families and the general public.'Malaria is a disease that even kills more than HIV/AID and the issue of HIV is what everybody is looking into, but nobody looks into malaria.'Ofurum also advised the Federal Government to sensitise the public on the dangers of malaria, while more funds should be provided for preventing the disease rather than treating it.Mrs Jumai Sanusi, a beneficiary of the net, commended COWA for the initiative, adding that it would reduce cases of malaria which had been the major disease plaguing the residents. It was also reported that the nets were also distributed to residents of customs barracks in Kuje, Karimo Utako, Nyanya and Karu.
