Published by Tribune on Tue, 29 Nov 2011

Cables of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) at the weekend, electrocuted a 28-year-old man, Segun Sora, in Agbala Raphael Area in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.A resident, Prince Joshua Akintan, who confirmed the electrocution, said the deceased lived in the area.'He was going to the farm to meet his elder sister around 5:00 p.m., but due to the water logged condition of the road, he slipped.'In an effort to keep his balance, he reached out for the cables, which had fallen to the ground over the years,' he said.Akintan said Segun was still alive and struggling, when he rushed to alert the authorities of PHCN to switch off power to save the life of the deceased.'When we eventually got back there, Segun had stopped moving.'He explained further that people in the community had been touching the cables for a long time because PHCN disconnected them.'That is what made us believe that the cables had no current the road has been in existence for more than 20 years, which was why nobody bothered to raise the wires,' he said. The corpse was deposited at the morgue of the state specialist hospital, Okitipupa. Also speaking with newsmen, a PHCN officer, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the wires were not connected.'The whole area had been disconnected years ago due to the failure of the inhabitants to pay their bills,' he said. The Divisional Police Officer for Okitipupa, Mr Ebenezer Adegulu confirmed the incident.Adegulu said that the police took the corps to the mortuary, adding that the matter was being investigated.
