SUPRISINGLY, men of the underworld do not keep their ammunition in distant and unknown places again nor do they live far away from their victims. This story is a clear instance that right within our immediate environment, they do not only live amongst us, but also have their benefactors in various forms. This was the case of suspected armed robbers paraded by the Kano State police command led by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tambari Mohammed, while addressing journalists in the ancient city of Kano, recently.According to him, Mr Shuaibu Danlami, a Nigerien, decided to help his tenants who were armed robbers to keep their working tools. The tenants were professional robbers who had problems with hiding their ammunition away from prying eyes.Danlami, who at that time, said he was unemployed, provided the needed cover for them right in his rooms and agreed that he be given certain percentage of their proceeds each time they returned from successful outings. The state CP said Danlami was not only their landlord, but he also doubled as their godfather. Said he, The big fish in our custody today is a landlord who happens to house armed robbers. He is not only their landlord, but was also a godfather in the armed robbery business. He dug a big hole in one of his rooms where various ammunition were kept. These included guns, cutlasses, masks, an AK 47 rifle with serial number AB350737 and 27 catridges, one double barrel gun with number FSA31877, five locally made pistols with eight rounds of live ammunition and three cartridges.Other items recovered from the pit latrines, according to the CP, were two cutlasses, two knives, shifting spanners, one operation cap used as a mask, various types of charms and other dangerous weapons used by his tenants for their operations. Anytime his boys wanted to go for an operation, he would bring out the working tools out of the hole in his room and immediately after the operation he would return them back to the armoury. In addition, the CP disclosed that the landlord was working with the armed robbers to the extent that he became their confidant, adding that he could not be isolated from activities of the gang.Danlami, who said that he was forced into the business due to his unemployment status, disclosed that the items were always kept inside the hole dug in his room, while other items that could implicate them were always disposed off in the pit latrine of a nearby unnamed school. When I saw the way my tenants spent money, I asked them to show me the way to making wealth. When they discovered that I was desperate and inquisitive, they opened up and confessed to me that they were armed robbers. They said that if I could assist them in keeping some of the weapons they use for operations, I would be entitled to a certain percentage of the money realised from their daily operation.Since I didnt have a job at hand, I obliged, helping them to keep their weapons in a hole that I dug inside one of my rooms, Danlami said. While trying to exonerate himself from the act, he said that he never, at any time, was part of their operations.Keeping the weapons was only my involvement. I never followed them to rob. If Allah saves me from this encounter, I promise not to venture into such a barbaric business again. Also I promise to eject them from the house, he said. The Kano CP said that the command was battle ready to rid the state of notorious people, adding that anybody planning to commit crime in the state should either relocate from Kano or find a better means of livelihood. He added that the state command had earlier arrested an Indian hemp dealer who was bringing the substance from the southern part of the country to Kano. Some India hemp dealers on their way to Kano, were involved in an accident. However, in an attempt to assist the occupants of the car, the police discovered a huge amount of the substance believed to be Indian hemp. But while the police was trying to save their lives, their colleagues in the business decided to trace them to the hospital and they were caught by the police.
