Published by Tribune on Fri, 25 Mar 2011

MANY market men and women at the popular Ogunpa market, Ibadan, Oyo State, had cause to weep during the week when fire razed a shop belonging to one of them.According to an eye witness, a smoke was seen coming out of the shop of one Mrs Olanrewaju Olowonyo Adepoju, after the owner of the shop had locked it after the days business. When the shop was forced open later,  fire had destroyed property inside the shop.Speaking with Community News, the shop owner, Mrs Olowonyo Adepoju, said she was on her way home on that fateful day when she suddenly received a phone call asking her to come back as her shop  was already in flames. We discovered that the fire was caused by an electric spark from an electricity cable. The people around and other shop owners at Ogunpa market tried their best to put out the fire, but they could not control the rapidly-spreading fire. We had to call the attention of  members of  the Oyo State Fire Service to put out the fire which was already out of control, she lamented.Mrs Olowonyo, who sells rubber shoes, said that the goods and property in the shop worth N20 million were completely destroyed, adding that she was now in serious problem because she got a loan from a cooperative society and also borrowed money from other people to stock the shop.Im finished, what would I do now I just got a loan to buy goods to stock the shop. In fact, I had a credit facility hanging on my neck, so what would I do now, she asked with tears rolling down her cheeks. The shop owner, however, pleaded for help from well-meaning Nigerians and government, stressing that her husband was sick and still bedridden and doesnt know whom to turn to.
