We are not happy conducting rerun in Ekiti Central II -INEC

Published by Tribune on Sat, 03 Dec 2011

The IndependentNational ElectoralCommission (INEC) in Ekiti State has said it is not happy conducting a rerun in Ekiti Central but said it had learnt its lessons from the court order that mandated the conduct of the election. In a related development, the candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the election slated for December 10, Mrs C.O. Oluwafemi, has withdrawn from the race, following her defection to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).Candidate of the National Transformation Party (NTP) in the April election had challenged the result of the election in court over the omission of the name of the party on the ballot paper used in the conduct of the national assembly election in the state. The Court of Appeal in Ado Ekiti had on November 17, upheld the ruling of the election petition tribunal in Ado Ekiti and thereby sacked Mr Oyetunji Ojo, a member of the ACN representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II in the House of Representatives, and ordered that another election be conducted in the constituency.Addressing newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday, on the commission's preparedness for the December 10 election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Hussaini Halilu Pai, said the verdict of the lower tribunal, which ruled in favour of the candidate of the NTP, Mr Peter Bamigbade Adekola, that his name and logo of his party were missing on the ballot papers in contravention of the Electoral Act of 2010, had taught the commission a lesson.Alhaji Pai said 'we are not happy conducting this election again because it is not because of fraud that it was cancelled, but because of the omission of name. We've learnt our lesson. For this one, we are getting it right.'He contended that 'no system is 100 percent perfect; even our leaders have said it that we are still learning, that we have not got it right and this omission is one of the challenges INEC face to make the system better.
