Gov's wife donates 100 wheelchairs to women

Published by Tribune on Sat, 03 Dec 2011

No fewer than 100phisically challenged women benefited from the free distribution of wheelchairs by the Wife of the Benue State Governor, Mrs Yemisi Suswam, to mark the fifth edition of 'Celebrate the Benue Woman', held in Makurdi recently.Speaking at the symposium organised for women of the state to mark the festivities, Mrs. Suswam said that women remained the driving force of the nation and urged them to stand up in defense of the nation's democracy by ensuring the sustenance of peace and harmony in their various communities.According to her, 'democracy has come to stay in our country and Nigeria must move forward despite the unfortunate actions of a few misguided persons. And as women, we have key roles to play in nation building by ensuring peace in our various communities and we cannot for any reason jettison that responsibility which we owe our country as a duty'.The governor's wife who particularly felt for the disabled mothers, charged them not to allow their spirit to be dampened by their condition but to always praise thy Lord almighty for their lives, assuring them that God will continue to guide their steps.Mrs Suswam also charged women in the state to rise up to the challenge posed by the spate of political violence in the state by cautioning their children and wards against being used as weapons of violence in the hands self seeking politicians.Earlier, the guest speaker at the forum and Technical Assistant to the Director General Of NAFDAC, Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, recalled the important role women played to ensure peace and conflict resolution in any given society.According to Dr Eimunjeze, 'Women are indispensable in our quest for sustainable development; this could be perceived from their roles as home managers where peace and development at the home front largely depends onthe woman'.'As role models, women are in the vantage position to ensure the resolution of conflicts, disagreements and grudges that stand against the oneness of our nation', she added.
