Marco Reus Transfer Inevitable, Oliver Kahn Heightens Dortmund Exit Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 28 Jan 2015

Bayern Munich goalkeeping legend Oliver Kahn believes Europe's elite clubs will "laugh" at the25 million buyout fee needed to lure Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund. The retired German suggested to Sport Bild (h/t Stefan Coertsof Goal.com)) thatBVB have little chance of maintaining their prized asset due to his insignificant release clause and Dortmund's position at the foot of the Bundesliga table:It will be very difficult for Dortmund to hold on to Reus, especially if we take into account that they are unlikely to qualify for European football.Dortmund will only be able to hold on to Reus if they push their own financial limits. If not, Reus will definitely walk out.The big clubs in Europe laugh about a 25m transfer fee these daysConsidering Reus' quality, the aforementioned fee is likely to leave Dortmund feeling aggrieved if he's snapped up. Although consistent injury problems impact the 25-year-old's value somewhat, in today's market, his quality could likely command a sum double this size.Reus has scored six goals and posted three assists in 11 matches this campaign, per WhoScored.com. Last season, he scored 16 and set up 13 in 30 Bundesliga fixtures, posting respective figures of 14 and nine the year before. The last time he failed to net a double-figure tally was the 2009-10 season with Borussia Monchengladbach, right at the beginning of his fame.Consistent injury problems put this record under threat, particularly as Dortmund have posted a terrible first half to the season. Reus has contributed to 20 percent of the side's 25 goals in the domestic division, despite only playing 41 percent of their 17 matches.Reus is the kind of player who can make his mark in seven starts, though, as many of the continent's major clubs are likely to know.Bayern, Chelsea and Real Madrid are three sides reportedly interested in snapping the player up, per the Daily Telegraph. All three clubs have the financial backing to blitz any attempts Dortmund make to keep Reus, particularly as manager Jurgen Klopp's side are unlikely to qualify for next season's Champions League. The boss recently admitted he hopes Reus won't follow Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski out the door, telling Die Welt (h/t Sky Sports), "The boys are 100 percent here and I have a positive feeling that the player we are talking about (Reus) will stay a bit longer."Bleacher Report UK's Sam Tighe recently dissected the player's qualities:It's important to acknowledge that Reus' bargain price makes him more attractive due to UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules. Acquiring such a world-class star for less than half of the 50 million Paris Saint-Germain paid for David Luiz would likely go down as the bargain of the year. Even with Reus' fitness problems, many are likely to want to take the risk at this price.Kahn's comments suggest something of a painful summer may be approaching for Dortmund fans. Even if the club climb back toward a respectable position in the table, it's likely multiple teams will be tempted by Reus. If he leaves, it's difficult to suggest others won't follow.
