Another bird flu outbreak

About two weeks ago, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture raised alarm of the presence of Avian Influenza otherwise known as Bird Flu in the country, identified as the H5N1 strain. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture said samples forwarded to the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, tested positive for the virus. By yesterday, the ministry confirmed the outbreak in eleven states in the country- Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Imo, Oyo, and Jigawa. The H5N1 is the most virulent strain of avian influenza that killed millions of birds since it first emerged in Asia in the late 1980s.
