Simple does it for Waconzy

Published by Guardian on Sun, 04 Dec 2011

Popularly called Waconzy by his fans, the Port Harcourt-bred musician, Anyanwu Obinna Kelvin, has grown from being an upcoming act to a pacesetter in the industry. The Project Management graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) recorded his first song in 1998 while still in high school. His breakthrough, however, came with the club banger, Ikebe Super, in 2008, and later Celebrate (Iworiwoh) in 2009, which won him awards. His dress sense has won him a large fan base and given him a lead among his contemporaries in the entertainment scene. He tells IFEOMA CHIME his idea of fashion. What is fashion to you'It's any trend in vogue. It's the outward looks and dress sense of a person. I am not really interested in current trends as it fades away easily. I wear simple and good-looking clothes with bright colours. I am innovative and most times, I put together my own crazy blend. Your style Wearing an outfit that is not common or dressing entirely different from others makes me unique. FavouritecolourNo particular colour, but I like bright colours.Favourite piece of clothingDesigner shirts, pair of jeans and good pairs of shoes to go with it.Most expensive piece of clothingMy Indian royal clothing.Favourite designer(s) Gucci.Signature scentBurberry. What would you not be caught wearing'You can't see me in torn clothes.Stylish iconsNaeto C, P-Diddy and TuFace. LikesSincerity.DislikesLies.What would you consider sexy in both men and women'Their looks and styles. Favourite foodYam and egg sauce. What is on the shopping list for the month'Good shirts, trousers and shoes. Craziest thing you have ever doneI once went clubbing with my crazy friends and that day, we almost brought the roof down. Most embarrassing momentWhen I greeted a friend of mine, insteadof answering, he ignored me. InspirationAlexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana. Who do you look up to in the entertainment industry'Apart from God, I look up to myself because I am who I am. I don't want to be like anybody, I just want to be myself. This is because; if you try to be like someone you will lose your uniqueness. So, I don't really look up to anyone, but the Almighty and myself. How do you source your songs and what makes your music unique'I sing about the society. In fact, my songs are my personal experiences. Any message for yours fans'To you all my supa dupa fans, thanks for your supports, I love you all and will not let you down. I will keep doing what I know how to do best. Nothing will stop me from giving you the best. And wait! Make una dey zip up ooooooo'but if you no fit abstain, use condom! What was your parents' reaction when you decided to take to music'Though it wasn't easy, my mum has been very supportive right from the start. She is responsible for what I am today; she gave me all the supports I needed both emotionally and otherwise. How did you come up with the stage name, Waconzy'Waconzy is a combination of two words ' Wacko meaning crazy and zany means being funny in a crazy way. So, I chose the name Waconzy because I go crazy whenever I'm on stage doing my thing. I go wacko when I am doing my song! I might look very simple, but when I'm doing my thing people call me crazy. That is how the name Waconzy came about and you have no other option than to call me crazy performer.Favourite quoteWhat goes around comes around. Philosophy of lifeLifeis not mere survival, struggle and ups and downs; it's a pleasing journey, which we have to pursue to achieve our goals. What would you change in Nigeriaif given the opportunity'Putting a stop to corruption.
