Jos: Ulama warns politicians against incitement

Published by Punch on Mon, 05 Dec 2011

Plateau State Council of Ulama and Elders has urged political leaders in the state to avoid utterances that could aggravate tension and jeopardise the peace process in the state. The council said the statements of some political leaders, especially after the eruption of violence in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area had created an atmosphere of fear and suspicion.Secretary of the council, Mr. Muhammad Ishaq, in a statement in Jos on Sunday, noted with regret that the outburst of some leaders who threw caution to the winds had exacerbated the tension on the ground. The statement said, The claim of ethnic cleansing against a particular group as made by such leaders is, to say the least, reckless and unbecoming. The council said it viewed with serious concern, the recent outbreak of disturbances in the council, stressing that no loss of human life was worth celebrating, especially in the hitherto peaceful Barkin Ladi community which had not been affected by the incessant conflicts in the Plateau North Zone. The statement which also called on the state government to play its fatherly role and desist from its hypocritical approach whenever there was an outbreak of conflicts, called on the National Emergency Management Agency to passionately assist victims of the latest round of crisis in the state.Ulamaappealed to all Muslims affected by the crisis to remain law abiding and take whatever had befallen them as destined by Allah. It stressed the need for security agencies to remain vigilant and patriotic in the discharge of their duty of maintaining peace in the state. We believe it is high time the Federal Government expedite action to address the issues surrounding the crises in Plateau State so that we will have true reconciliation and lasting peace, the statement said.
