Commercial vehicle owners warned to steer clear of politics

Published by Tribune on Mon, 05 Dec 2011

THE newly electedPresident of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Alhaji Kassum Ibrahim Bataiya, has told commercial vehicle owners in the country, especially in Kano State, to steer clear of politics and not allow any politician to turn them into instrument of destruction. The NARTO president also tasked commercial vehicle owners in various communities in the state to avert any crisis that could bring disrepute and dent the image of the association. He made this assertion in Kano recently. According to him, road transport workers should know their responsibilities and limit under the ambit of the law and they should realise that their major duty was to provide affordable transport system for the entire citizenry.Alhaji Bataiya further urged members of NARTO in the state to shun any act capable of causing disunity and disaffections among them, just as he advised them to make sure that they embark on activities that could contribute to the development of the country and enhance her socio-economic activities. He, however, disclosed that the new leadership of the association has pledged its readiness in nation building, adding that efficient and effective transportation system would help to lubricate the engine of economic development. He explained that the former president of the association, Inusa has exceeded his constitutionally permitted tenure of eight years, stressing that the outgone NARTO president spent over nine years in excess of what NARTO's constitution allows. In his words, 'If the association must grow, we must abide and practise the rules of the game, and the rules of the game are clearly enshrined in the constitution of the association. The executive committee has for the first time arranged a soft landing for the former president, which has never been done for any of the previous leaders.'Alhaji Bataiyi, however, stated that NARTO leadership selected 1st October to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election, but has to shift it due to the fact that Hajj was close then, a situation that prompted its deferment to November 23rd and 24th.'t was done to allow every member to participate in the AGM because we believed every member that went for Hajj would have returned home so that nobody would protest that he was sidelined from the AGM,' he concluded.
