Foundation lifts table tennis in Lagos schools

Published by Guardian on Mon, 05 Dec 2011

AS part of its efforts to fulfill its objectives of encouraging students to embrace sports, Adeyemi Olumide Karunwi Foundation is staging a one-week table tennis tournament among 25 schools in Lagos State. The championship will involve schools from the six education districts of the state and it is expected to serve off on December 12 at Mobolaji Johnson Complex, Rowe Park in Yaba.A board member of the foundation, Adebamike Oloko told The Guardian that the foundation had been backing sports in schools for dome time, adding that the table tennis tourney was another way to help the government to unearth talents in the game as well as promote sporting activities in public schools.'The foundation started three decades ago and it has been encouraging sports and education among the less-privileged because the welfare of the youths is one of the objectives the foundation was set up by our grandfather, the late Adeyemi Olumide Karunwi.'In the past, we had sponsored sports like volleyball, hockey, badminton and handball, while we have been involved in sponsorship of inter-house sports competitions in 34 public schools in Lagos. This we are doing to support especially the less privileged,' she said. The Office of Sports, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development is backing the tournament with players expected to compete for honours in seven events. Also, the selected players from the competition would be nurtured and trained by top coaches in the state after the tournament, while the awards to be won by the participants include, Most Well Behaved School, Most Valuable Player (MVP) for boys and girls events with cash rewards and trophies to be doled out by the organisers.
