Quadrangular games a potential gold mine, says Ettah

GROUP Managing Director of UAC Plc, Larry Ettah, has described the Quadrangular Games as a fertile ground for future athletes, who could represent the country creditably in international meets.Declaring the 21st edition of the Games closed over the weekend at the Lagos Country Club, Ettah said the level of participation, the games' officiating standard, facilities and the new focus of the games have made the championship a conducive platform for discovering and nurturing athletes, and commended the organisers for putting up a good event.The annual Games involve four foremost clubs in Lagos - Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Apapa Club and the host of this year's edition, Lagos Country Club. Ettah commended the Local Organising Committee of the 21st edition, known as LCC 2011, for introducing the children edition, where junior members of the participating clubs honed their skills, promising that his company would work towards making the games more successful and building enduring future that would benefit the country. At the end of the competition, the Lagos Country Club emerged champion of the eight-day tournament, topping the medals table with 37 gold, 27 silver and 56 bronze medals. Ikoyi Club 1938 came second with 17 gold, 12 silver and 19 bronze medals, Apapa Club won nine gold, four silver and seven bronze medals, while Lagos Lawn Tennis Club won three gold and eight bronze medals to place third and fourth respectively. In his remarks, President of the Lagos Country Club, Wale Osomo, expressed delight at the successful completion of this year's edition of the games, saying that the championship 'is set to go places. Our target is to get our children to the Olympics and win medals for our country.' Osomo congratulated the winners and urged participants to continue to take part in the championship.Participants competed for medals in several games, including tennis, swimming, badminton, snooker, table tennis, chess, taekwondo, scrabble, squash, table tennis and dart.
