SWIT sensitises students to tax, finance issues

Published by Punch on Tue, 06 Dec 2011

The Society of Women in Taxation has organised a one-day seminar for accounting and law students of the University of Lagos to create awareness on the opportunities in being a professional tax practitioner. The National Chairperson, SWIT, Mrs. Justina Okoror, in a paper she presented, stated that the purpose of the programme was to sensitise the students and foster integration of the accounting and law students into the university tax club. She said, One of our objectives as SWIT is to educate the general public on tax and finance related issues. The forum with the students is meant to catch them young. We want to create the culture of seeing tax payment as a civic responsibility and inculcate attitude of voluntary compliance in them.Okoror adds, Also as youths and law students, we emphasised to them the need to demand for good tax governance from the local, state and Federal Government. There is so much corruption and infrastructural decay because nobody is demanding for their tax rights. In other words nobody is demanding for accountability of revenues generated from all sectors. The students are the leaders of tomorrow and if issues of accountability and tax management are driven home we can be sure of a better tomorrow.According to Okoror, SWIT is an arm of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, concerned with issues of good tax governance. She said, The institute has the statutory responsibility to regulate the practice of the tax profession in Nigeria. The society has committed itself to supporting and defending indigent women who may have issues with the tax system or authority.
