Ericsson plans competition for W'African apps developers

Information Communications Technology vendor, Ericsson, has said it is planning a regional competition for applications developers on the Android platform.The company, in a statement on Monday, said it had already struck a partnership with Sony Ericsson to run the competition in West Africa.The Country Manager, Ericsson Nigeria, Mr. Gary Dewing, said the competition titled Apps for Africa, would run under the aegis of the 2012 Ericsson Application Awards.The EAA 2012, according to him, is an ongoing annual competition for application developers worldwide organised by Ericsson Research.He noted that Apps for Africa was designed to promote the development of innovative ideas and mobile applications from a variety of environments and situations peculiar to the region.These, he noted, were expected to enable new opportunities for people to collaborate, innovate, learn, care and participate in more efficient ways that positively impact our environment.This competition is an amazing opportunity for local talent to showcase their capabilities in the global community of innovators and developers. It reflects our ambition to use technology to change lives for the better, he said.Dewing said members of the winning teams in each region would each receive a Sony Ericsson Xperia phone, while teams in second place would receive Business Experience Packs, including Sony Ericsson MW600, office pro, McAfee, and a micro USB cable.Speaking on the partnership, the Head of Market Unit Africa, Sony Ericsson, Mr. Jorgen Berg, said, Our objective for Sony Ericsson is to be the preferred choice for Android devices by delivering the most entertaining smartphones and adding value to peoples lives. We are thrilled to run this Android application competition, which will bring about innovative solutions to enrich the user experience of our Xperia handsets.
