Eguavoen a gentleman, says Okosieme, Lawal

Former internationals Ndubuisi Okosieme and Garba Lawal have described former national U-23 team coach Austin Eguavoen as a gentleman after the former Nigeria defender resigned from his post in the aftermath of the teams elimination from the London 2012 Olympic Games.In a country where people in positions are not often known to tender their resignation letters, Eguavoens resignation came as a shock to many close followers of the game.There are coaches and there are coaches; he (Eguavoen) has just done the right thing by pulling out rather than wait to be sacked. He tried his best but it wasnt enough and he had to drop his resignation letter. He is a gentleman, Okosieme, who played alongside Eguavoen at the Maroc88 Nations Cup, said.Lawal, Eguavoens teammate at the France98 World Cup, said a coach worth his salt should know when to resign from his post.When a coach fails, he should come out and take responsibility. Thats the only thing a gentleman can do. We hope to see the next coach and the kind of programmes he will bring for the team, Lawal said.
