Ex-HOS blames erosion of values for nation's woes

Published by Punch on Tue, 06 Dec 2011

The immediate past Head of Service of the Federation, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, has attributed the various problems facing the country to Nigerians lack of shame. He said contrary to prevailing trend, there were some negative traits in the past that Nigerians would not want to be identified with.Afolabi spoke in Abuja on Sunday night at a dinner organised in his honour by federal public office-holders from Oyo State. He regretted that the country, especially the South- West, no longer had leaders that work hard to put their people ahead of others. This, he said, explained why many Nigerians toiled daily without anything to show for their struggle. The situation according to him, has forced many people to decide not to bother any longer, thinking there is no reason to work hard.Afolabi urged indigenes of Oyo State, irrespective of their political affiliations, to unite to restore the states lost glory. He said, We must re-organise ourselves. We should not let it be like our nations sports story where we have brilliant stars without team work.Whether we belong to the ACN or the PDP, unity is very important. We must pursue equity, unity and progress and be close to God in all our dealings. The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Olajumoke Akinjide, said she decided to spearhead the honour for Afolabi because he made Oyo State proud during his tenure as the HOS.Akinjide urged the people of the state to see one another as one and work towards its common good. She promised to ensure that they meet regularly in order to make the state truly the pacesetter state. The Majority Leader, House of Representatives, Mrs. Mulikat Akande, also described Afolabi as a cool-headed office-holder that deserves the honour. She harped on the need for all office holders from Oyo State to work together irrespective of their political leanings and asked the people to continue to advise them. Also, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Chief Niyi Otunla, said the office holders from the state would do more good for themselves when they meet regularly, saying united we stand, divided we fall.He described Afolabi as a hardworking individual he enjoyed working with when he was still in service.
