Foreign based Players killed Dream Team - Esu

Published by Tribune on Tue, 06 Dec 2011

FORMER Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) coach, Godfrey Esu has attributed the woeful performance of Nigeria's U-23 side in the CAF U-23 Championship in Morocco to too much reliance on the foreign based players.Esu said if Eguavoen have built his team around the local based players, he would have failed like that winning only a game and failure to qualify the country for the male football event in next year's Olympic Game."Sole dependent on foreign-based players ruined him and it is a big lesson to others."It's a lesson to the new Super Eagles manager, Stephen Keshi to have a stand by team build around the local players."With solid local team in place, a coach can always add flesh to his team with few foreign based players."Even when they didn't show up for one reason or another it will not weaken the entire team."Esu however commended the former Nigerian international for resigning his appointment as coach of the Dream Team V."It's a honourable thing to do, it showed that there are Nigerian coaches who are still honourable."It's better than wait to be disgraced. Let him look for another job mostly in the domestic league."On how to avert the spate of failures in future, the veteran coach said we should do thorough soul searching."We have to sit down and reflect how we have been doing things in the past."Have we been cutting corners to achieve those successes, using over aged players for an under-aged competitions."We have to look ourselves in the face and tell the truth as it is."We must learn from our misfortunes so that we can progress in future," he said.
