Robbers kill 3, injure 1 in Port Harcourt

Published by Tribune on Tue, 06 Dec 2011

Three persons, including a policeman and two employees of a communication outlet, one of who was a pregnant woman, were in the early hours of Monday gunned down by a female-led gang of robbers in Port Harcourt. The incident, which occurred at about 8.30a.m. opposite the Collectibles Accessories shop on Rumuola Road, also left the fourth victim wounded.Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that the dead victims, who were riding in a gray Volkswagen Jetta, were either on their way to deposit money or had just withdrawn same from one of the new generation banks around the area when the robbers stopped their vehicle, shot them and took away the money. The fourth victim, it was gathered, was seeing a friend off when a stray bullet hit him .It was further learnt that the gang of armed robbers included two females and three males, who were brandishing an unusual kind of machine guns.'It was like they trailed the people to that point. I am not sure, but I guess they had just withdrawn the money or they were on their way to deposit the money when they were attacked. The leader of the gang is a woman. She was the one who pulled the trigger on the people in the car and carried the money.'It took them about 10 minutes to kill, rob and escape from the spot. They went through NTA Road and while they were robbing, there was no policeman or security operative that confronted them or tried to stop them,' an eyewitness said.Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers police command, Ben Ugwuegbulam (DSP), said the hoodlums, besides killing the victims, also robbed them of a yet-to-be ascertained amount and GSM recharge cards.
