Published by Tribune on Tue, 06 Dec 2011

Following the intense harmattan inKano, charcoal business now booms in the city and its environs, as users purchase it in large quantities to heat their rooms.According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) checks, the residents now live in severe cold as a result of the hazy and harsh harmattan weather.Malam Bilyaminu Ibrahim, a charcoal seller at Sharada Phase II area of the state capital, told NAN that he sold many bags daily, noting that demand for the product had greatly increased due to the chilly weather.Abdulkarim Yahya, another dealer at Sabon-Gari Market in Kano, said he was recording huge sales daily.According to him, 'I made more than N50,000 in the last three days when the weather became very cold and people purchased coal to warm their rooms.''A teenager, Muhammad Abdussalam, who resided in Na'ibawa Quarters, also said that he made much money in the past few days and had increased the volume of charcoal he bought from his dealers.'I was buying a small quantity just to sell and sponsor my education, but when I realised that demand was higher in the last few days, I got some money from my father and bought a large quantity, which is almost finished.''Malam Uzairu Ibrahim, a customer, told NAN that charcoal was more reliable and cost-effective than electric room heaters ``because heaters need constant electricity, which is not available in Kano''.
