Substandard generators: SON to meet importers, assemblers

Published by Punch on Wed, 07 Dec 2011

In view of the current role of generators as a critical source of power generation in business and entrepreneurship development in the country, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria has said it is ready to rid the Nigerian market of substandard generators.Accordingly, the Director-General of SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, who disclosed this in interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, said that the agency had scheduled a meeting with both the local assemblers and importers for Wednesday this week (Dec. 7) in Lagos, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem.According to him, it has been established that the life span of generators in the nations markets is below what is normally inscribed on them. Odumodu said that about 50 per cent of the generators in the market were rated above their actual capacity, while over 30 per cent were of low capacity. He added that the breakers installed on the generators had failed short circuit test, stressing that "they have very high noise, in spite of the fact that they are sound-proof." Odumodu said that there was a very high level of counterfeiting of the approved generators, which had low quality winding wire. "All importers and assemblers of the generating sets must meet the required standard parameters, especially the Nigeria Industrial Standard," he said. The SON boss, however, advised the importers to assist the agency in identifying individuals or organisations behind the importation of the substandard products in the country.
