Dual-screen phones: Killing two birds with one stone

Published by Punch on Wed, 07 Dec 2011

JAYNE AUGOYE peeps at dual-screen mobile phones with which one can undertake various tasks at the same timeDue to the fast-paced nature of the world today, multitasking has become necessary in order to get things done under a given time frame. For the busy executive, it is not uncommon to see him or her joggle meetings, answer phone calls and send emails simultaneously. With all these tasks waiting to be done, dual screen mobile phones come in handy. As its name suggests, a dual screen phone has two screens that allow you to enjoy two or more features at the same time.Overwhelmed by a constant stream of data that flow into a Smartphones, dual- screen mobile phone manufacturers say, many people struggle to respond to text messages, tweets and e-mails in a timely fashion.Today, there are so many options to choose from in the competitive mobile phone market. LGs DoublePlay is an example. The handset boasts a 3.5-inch Touchscreen display for viewing content and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that may appeal to the Blackberry buff. The DoublePlay also comes with another 2-inch Touchscreen that splits the keyboard into two, and serves as a second application dock for fast task-switching.The gadget also allows instant access to about eight applications on the second screen, thereby eliminating the need to press the home button in order to access the application menu. For those obsessed with multitasking, tweeting and texting, it will come in handy. In addition to the 2-inch Touchscreen, the DoublePlay boasts a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running Gingerbread, the latest version of Android, 5 megapixels camera with support for 720p HD video capture.Sprints Kyocera Echo, on the other hand, prides itself as the worlds first dual-screen Andriod Phone. Its two 3.5-inch 480 x 800 displays can be unfolded and used as a single 4.7-inch 960 x 800 surface. The screens are connected by a slick sliding liquid-metal hinge. As such, it can be closed and used like a regular single-screen phone, unfolded all the way, and even made to look like a laptop. It also has dual-screen support to seven core applications like the browser, email, and messaging. According to the maker, all seven optimised applications can be run on each screen individually so you can have the browser up top and email below, and several of them. It also includes useful full-dual-screen views as well as a new dual-screen application manager, which comes up when the user taps the two screens simultaneously. However, the Echo does not really run the optimised applications simultaneously when you have two of them openit quickly switches them in and out of hibernation, even though theyre both displayed on screen. That means it is impossible to watch a video while writing an email, for example. As for battery life, it is said to last about a day with heavy use of both screens. Interestingly, the Echo is being sold in a bundle with a second battery in an external charging case.Another dual screen phone is the GENESIS. The mobile phone has the dual-screen flip design of the EnV phones, runs on Android 2.2, thereby making it a Smartphone instead of a feature phone. It also has two touch screens instead of one, and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, DLNA, and a five-row QWERTY keyboard. Finally, the T6000 mobile phone has a 3.2 inch Double touch screen TV and a QWERTY keyboard. Other features include a Video recorder, MP3, MP4, Sound recorder, Calendar, tasks, Alarm, World clock, Calculator, Currency converter, Stopwatch, E-book, Facebook, Bluetooth and Opera mini browser. How to take care of your mobile phone screenUsea screen protectorA rule that is applicable to mostly everything with a screen. It works as a cover to protect your screen from being scratched. Some of the most popular types of screen protectors are regular, privacy and anti-glare. Anti-glare would be the best as it prevents fingerprints and makes your phone looks solid.- Avoid pressing the screenSince Smartphones nowadays are equipped with capacitive Touchscreen, there is no need for you to poke it with stylus or anything with pointed end. Everything will be fine with just your fingers. You wouldnt want to waste hundreds or thousands that you have invested.- Use a case or pouchThis is not just to avoid scratches on the screen but also on the body of your phones.. The best case would be the leather case that covers both front and back side of your phones. Leather cases have better shock absorbers compared to gel or plastic case.- Wipe the screen regularlyLittle by little and the damage done is irreversible. Accumulated dust and smudges can get through the screen protector and damage the screen. This is because the friction of the dust and your finger will eventually make the screen protector go thinner day by day.
