Adejube commends Eguavoen

Published by Tribune on Wed, 07 Dec 2011

FORMER boardmember of the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Elder Dickson Adejube has commended coach Austin Eguavoen for quitting as the head coach of the national U-23 side. The former Super Eagles defender threw in the towel after the team failed to go beyond the group stage of the inaugural CAF U-23 Championship holding in Morocco which serves as the qualifier for the London 2012 Olympics.Reacting to the coach's decision to step down, Adejube said the step taken by Eguavoen was a good one adding that he has demonstrated that Nigeria still has some coaches who know what they are doing."By taking the bull by the horn to throw in the towel without waiting until he is pushed out, Eguavoen has won my respect. Unlike some coaches who will prove stubborn even when it is clear that they have nothing to offer, he has really proved he knows his onions''Apart from failing to qualify for the semi final in Morocco which denied Nigeria the chances of featuring in the football event of the Olympics, Eguavoen's team had failed to book a ticket to the All-Africa Games held in Maputo, Mozambique.Adejube, a former Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association described the perfromance of the team in Moroco as disgraceful and another blow to the country's football."It was no doubt another disastrous one for our football, it is an understatement to say that the U-23 side let us down in Egypt," lamented the retired FIFA badge referee.
