Peaceful North is imperative - Sultan

THE Sultan ofSokoto, Alhaji Sa'adAbubakar II, has said that a peaceful North is not only desirable but also paramount to the unity of Nigeria, saying that 'if the North is united, we are talking about a united Nigeria; also if the North is in crisis, the whole country is in crisis. Again if the North is not stable, the whole country is not stable.'Speaking on Tuesday, in Kaduna, during a two-day conference on peace and unity, organised by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the Sultan said that it was, therefore, desirable for the North to remain as one peaceful entity if the country must remain a united.He remarked that for any meaningful progress to be made in the North, traditional rulers must be given back their roles of exciting, direct influence on their subjects, pointing out that traditional rulers used to be responsible for monitoring and presiding over disputes in their localities.
