Effective LG administration, key to national development

Published by Tribune on Wed, 07 Dec 2011

AN efficient andeffectiveadministration at the third tier of government is essential to the bid to ensure a sustainable national economic growth and development.Mr Bayo Akinjide, an aspirant seeking to contest the chairmanship of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, made the above disclosure while speaking with Community News in a telephone interview recently.Akinjide, who is seeking the council office on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), said that the ability of both the state and federal governments to ensure development from bottom to the top would also promote the interest of the people in public governance. The aspirant said that he was contesting the chairmanship office mainly to give the people at the grass roots level a true sense of belonging in the polity, adding that bringing governance to the people would help to ease the growing tension across the country.'It is a known fact that successive governments in all parts of the country have alienated the people in the issue of governance over the years. Most of our people in the villages have become passive in their approach to issues affecting the polity because of the apparent insensitivity on the part of our leaders.'Governance should be all-encompassing; it is about giving all the people a sense of belonging by carrying them along in real governance. We should evolve programmes that would ensure even development at the grass roots level.'While most of our past leaders (and even some of the present ones) have been talking about bringing the dividends of democracy to the people at the grass roots level, the reality is that the people have been suffering from depravities, even in the face display of apparent opulence by the leaders.'We should strive at all times to give our people a sense of belonging; we should carry them along in the various developmental policies we are evolving, both at the state and the national levels. By so doing, the people would be actively involved in the task of developing the country,' he said.
