Airtel Nigeria apologises for outage, promises improved services

AIRTEL Nigeria has apologised to its Lagos customers, after many were cut off from communication over the weekend. The partial network blackout, according to the telecommunications firm was due to cables damaged by construction workers.'Airtel Networks Limited sincerely apologise to our esteemed customers, especially those in Lagos, for the network disruptions which resulted in poor data and call services in the evening of Saturday, December 4, 2011,' Airtel stated.The company also confirmed to source of the outage. 'Our investigations revealed that the partial network failure, which lasted for over three hours, was due to the vandalisation of our underground network fibre cables by some construction workers in Lagos mainland.'While it said that the network was back to full strength, it also used to opportunity the drive the notion to the Nigerian government that telecommunications equipment should be declared a critical national infrastructure.'We want to use this medium to reiterate our strident call on the relevant governmental authorities to urgently declare telecommunications infrastructure as critical national infrastructure. A policy in this direction will go a long way in securing telecommunications equipment across the country and help in boosting the quality of service often negatively affected by disruptions caused by vandalisation of this vital equipment,' Airtel concluded.
