FRSC to intensify prosecution of offenders

Published by Punch on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

The Federal Road Safety Commission says it will focus more on the enforcement of road safety laws and prosecution of offenders in Lagos State next year. The state Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Jonas Agwu, said this during an awareness walk organised in Lagos by the Temidayo Ogan Child Safety and Support Foundation. He said, "We have seen parents carrying children under the age of 12 in the front seat on many occasions. The law is that children in that age group should be at the back and properly strapped. In 2012, we will be arresting people like that and prosecuting them."We are also going to check other unsafe practices."The FRSC commander said the corps would also focus on the observance of zebra crossings and other road signs. He said, "We have commenced a weekly prosecution of traffic offenders. So, if anyone still disobeys traffic signs, we would invoke the provisions of the law by arresting and prosecuting them. By January, we are expanding the scope of the trial of offenders."Agwu said the FRSCs involvement with the foundation was in keeping with the principles of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety. Founder of the TOCSS, Mrs. Temidayo Ogan, said the event was the fifth edition of the sensitisation walk organised by her foundation. She said it was born out of the need to sensitise the public on child personal safety policy and pedestrian safety. She said, "We decided to peg our campaign on chidren because there is a statistics which suggests that victims of road crashes are mainly youth between the age of 5 and 29."
