PDP chiefs canvass unity in party

Published by Punch on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

The Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Sumaila, has commended the efforts being made by Mr. Ibrahim Birma, in touring all chapters of the party nationwide in his campaign for the partys national chairmanship position.Sumaila, who stated this when the national campaign train of Birma visited the Kano secretariat of the PDP, observed that many past chairmen of the party did not emerge by such broad-based consensus. He said this had made it difficult for the different interest groups within the party to fully accept their leadership.Although embarking on a nationwide tour would come with a lot of strain, such an exercise, he said, would prepare the person for the task of mobilising support for the party at election times. He said, We want to have a national chairman that emerges with full grass roots support.Earlier, Birma, in his speech, promised to evolve a PDP that would be attractive to everybody including present day opponents. He said, I want to build a PDP that will be formidable, one which is strengthened by a unity of purpose. We want to start today to prepare for the future of our children and I can tell you that if we do not constructively evolve the right kinds of leadership for the future, posterity will not be lenient on us.I am one of those that believe that building a PDP of the future requires the integration the youth in the national scheme of things. In my reflections on how to position the Peoples Democratic Party for sustained dominance in Nigeria in the distant future, I am inclined to usher in a system that will organically evolve leadership for the country from the ranks of our younger generation.
