Published by Punch on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

A family, Olowo-Olisa of Ewu-Odofin Village, Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, has accused the Redeemed Christian Church of God of trespassing on its land measuring 31.353 hectares in size. The land is a subject of dispute between the family and the RCCG before a Sagamu High Court. The land in dispute forms part of the rear fringes of the RCCGs Redemption Camp, located along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Also joined as the second defendant in the suit with number, HCS/114/2010, is the General Overseer of the RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. In their statement of claim dated November 23, 2010, the five claimants who filed the suit on behalf of the family stated that they had taken all steps to disallow the church from continuing to trespass on their land when they noticed the development. The claimants are Chief Adeboye Jaiyesinmi, Alhaji Jamiu Ayodeji, Chief Jinadu Obisola, Chief Adebonpe Oduntan and Ganiyu Ayodeji. The statement of claim filed by their counsel, Mr. Yemi Omodele, reads in part, "Recently, the claimants noticed the act of trespass and/or encroachment of defendants on their land, the subject of this suit."All steps taken by the claimants to disallow the defendants from continue trespassing and/or encroachment on their land proved abortive."Asking the court to order an award of N500,000 against the defendants as general damages, they also urged the court to restrain the defendants from further remainning on the land. However, in its defence statement, filed on May 25, 2011, by its counsel, Tunde Ologunde, the RCCG maintained that it owned the land in dispute having purchased the land from "accredited customary owners."
