Violence: Aminu seeks proscription of religious bodies

Published by Punch on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Prof. Jibril Aminu, said on Tuesday in Kaduna that the abolition of umbrella Christian and Muslim religious bodies would bring about lasting solution to the endemic problems of violence in the country.Aminu advocated that the proscription of such religious groups and associations would put an end to recurring violence.Speaking at the just-concluded Northern Peace Conference, Aminu argued that the proscription of such bodies would be in the interest of peace in Nigeria. He accused religious leaders in the country of conniving with politicians to perpetrate injustice against the people by sectionalizing their religious faith.Aminu further accused the religious leaders and the media of setting out to incite violence, intolerance and disharmony in the country by instigating the people against public officers, including security agents. The former minister warned that religious and political leaders must retrace their steps by emulating Nigerias founding fathers to ensure the overall development of the country.Aminu said, "Religious leaders of all kinds and at all levels and the media are set out to incite violence, intolerance and disharmony, instigating people against all public officers and make sure they are held in their homes. He also accused Northern youths of complicity in the current problems of the country, pointing out that if they were truly dissatisfied with the leaders, they would have been rejecting what he described as "hand out money" from the Northern leaders.Aminu, however, warned northern leaders of dire consequences ahead if they failed to give room for the existence of peace through good governance and development.
