Published by Tribune on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

Nigeria Inter-Religious Council(NIREC) has recommended that anyone found culpable in the Boko Haram menace and other security threats in the country should be charged under the Criminal Code with murder.According to the communique issued by the council after its three-day second quarterly meeting held in Ilorin and signed by the national of the council, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, the security issue must be effectively addressed by all means by the Federal Government.Reading the communique to journalists in Ilorin, on Wednesday, the national coordinator said shedding of blood of innocent persons was an abomination before God and a crime against the the nation.NIREC, which observed that violence and insecurity in the country were on the rise, said that peace and security of life and property were essential for the promotion of democratic principles and development of the nation. The council called on the Federal Government to do a general review of security administration, to promote security in all parts of the nation. It also appealed to all religious leaders and stakeholders to avoid provocative or reckless preaching and utterances which are inimical to peace and harmony. While it urged Christians and Muslims, especially their leaders, to continue to dialogue in order to promote peace and religious harmony in the country, NIREC charged all Nigerians to live and act out the nation's motto of 'unity and faith, peace and progress.'On same-sex marriage, the council urged the government not to succumb to pressure from any external group to undermine the shared values of the country. It commended the Senate for passing the bill against same sex marriage, saying the practice offends the moral sensibility of Nigerians and urged the House of Representatives to follow suit.
