NGO to award scholarships to 100 indigent female students in Jigawa

A Kano-based NGO'' Ma'ajin Watari Foundation'' will award scholarships to 100 indigent female students from Jigawa State to study Medicine at the university.Alhaji Musa Ibrahim, chairman of the publicity committee of the foundation told newsmen in Kano that another 2, 200 students had been selected for similar programme from Kano State.According to Ibrahim, the beneficiaries will be selected from senior secondary schools in two local government areas of the state through a special examination to be conducted by the organisation in collaboration with the state's ministry of education.'We hope to produce at least 2,300 female doctors by 2018 from Kano State; that is, 50 from each of the 44 local governments of the state and another 100 from two local governments of Jigawa,'he said.He said that the scholarships, which total worth was not specified, would cater to the needs of indigent students from the states in the course of the medical programmes in any Nigerian university.Ibrahim, therefore, appealed to other NGOs, regardless of their thrusts, to poll resources to enhance girl-child education in the two states.He commended the state Science and Technical Schools Board for providing classrooms at the Girls' Science College, Garko and the Girls' Science and Technical School, Kano, for the training of the selected students from eight metropolitan local governments.The scholarships are expected to be awarded before the end of the month, he said.
