A/Ibom provides transformers for 1,069 communities

Published by Tribune on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

In its bid to boost dis-tribution of electricity in rural areas, the Akwa Ibom State government has distributed transformers to 1,069 rural communities in the state in the past four years.Mr Sunday Anyang, the Commissioner for Rural Development, disclosed this in Uyo recently. He said that out of the 2, 671 villages in the state, more than 1, 210 had been linked to the national grid.'As I speak, we are embarking on more electricity projects across the state. Our target is that by 2012, several rural communities will be connected to the national grid.'When completed, the project will link 85 per cent of our villages to the national grid,' Anyang said. The commissioner pointed out that if every village in the state has electricity, it would boost economic activities and reduce the problem of rural-urban migration. He said that the state's Independent Power Plant had capacity to produce 191 megawatts of electricity.Anyang added that several rural schools, hospitals and villages in the state had been supplied with potable water through the Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Agency.'Our role in water supply is to provide single point delivery, we do not reticulate because reticulation is the function of Akwa Ibom Water Company.'We also construct boreholes in rural areas,' Anyang said. The commissioner expressed optimism that at the end of the administration of Governor Godswill Akpabio, life would be meaningful for people in rural areas of the state.
