Community projects, not our responsibilities''Rep

Published by Tribune on Thu, 08 Dec 2011

The Chairman,House Committee on Science and Technology, Honourable Biodun Isiaq Akinlade, has said that the major role of legislators is to make laws and nothing more.He said that the people misconstrued the responsibilities of the legislators, saying 'Nigerians believe that legislators should do projects in their constituencies whereas, what we can only do is to facilitate projects through House Committees to our constituencies.'Hon Akinlade made this observation recently in Abuja, when members of Yewa-Awori Concerned Professionals (YACP) paid him a courtesy visit. He said that the rate of unemployment among the youth, in the area was high that he had to use his contact within and outside the National Assembly to secure employment for some of them in the federal and state civil service.Akinlade also explained how he had used his position at the National Assembly to bring some projects, not only to his area, but also to the entire Ogun West.'Honestly, I want to tell you that my area has been so marginalised by successive governments in Ogun State, and this has given us a major setback, politically, socially, among other stakeholders in the state,' Akinlade said.Hon Akinlade also told the YACP that Senator Ibikunle Amosun became the governor of Ogun State through the will of God.He noted that there was nothing anybody could do about it, as he has been destined for the position, saying 'so, we have to give Senator Amosun our support towards his quest to rebuild Ogun State.'Akinlade, representing Yewa South and Ipokia Federal Constituency, however, said that in 2015, he would work for whoever was chosen from Yewa-Awori as governor of Ogun State.'At the last election in Ogun State, about 95 per cent of Yewa-Awori believed and worked for the realisation of our dream of becoming the governor as the Egbas did for Governor Amosun, but the presence of two Yewa candidates in the race made us to lose the opportunity.'He was of the view that Ogun West local politics played itself out when they were unable to reconcile their common goal, adding that, 'that followed us to the poll with divided votes'.
