Youths partner LAWMA on street sanitation

Published by Punch on Fri, 09 Dec 2011

A non-governmental organisation, Mainland Youth Movement, has carried out a sanitation exercise on the Lagos Mainland in collaboration with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority. The president of the group, Mr. Shehu Amodu, during the exercise in Lagos on Wednesday, said it was organised to orientate the entire community on environmental sanitation. He said, It has come to our notice that Mainland communities are surrounded by ocean, which makes it prone to flood and other communicable and non-communicable diseases. We have gathered today to demonstrate to the world the right path to sanitation that is rarely observed.Amodu lamented that industries and companies located within the vicinity contributed little to the cleanliness of environment, forgetting that cleanliness is not only next to Godliness but to healthiness. It is regretful that industries dont perform their corporate responsibility especially in the area of cleanliness. In fact, there have been situations where shops, markets and industries have been locked for their negligence to environmental sanitation, Amodu said.He also said the area was confronted with various challenges ranging from diseases, hunger, malnutrition and child abuse, poverty, lack of adequate health education, deprivation and neglect.Amodu said those led to loss of hope, absence of peace and inability of youths to realise their ambition in life and to contribute their quotas to a healthy community building.Representative of LAWMA, Mr. Bamidele Ogijo, said the exercise tallied with the agencys agenda to ensure cleanliness of the environment. He said, It is good this is coming from a group of youths. It goes a long way to show the support for environmental sanitation. We have also contributed our quota by donating environmental materials, handbills and a patrol van to the group for the effectiveness of the rally.Ogijo added that people must take enviromental sanitation seriously, adding that LAWMA was determined to eradicate environmental indiscipline.
