Robbery scare: Banks remain shut in Ibadan

Published by Tribune on Fri, 09 Dec 2011

For the second dayrunning, banks inIbadan, on Thursday, refused to open for business due to rumours that armed robbers planned to attack banks in the metropolis. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that banks in Ibadan, on Wednesday, shut down for business following rumours that two new generation banks in the town were attacked by armed robbers.A NAN correspondent, who visited the Challenge area of Ibadan on Thursday reported that all the banks in the area were shut while scores of angry customers gathered outside the premises lamenting the development. An official of the Fidelity Bank branch in the area, who declined to reveal his name, told the crowd to go home, as the bank had resolved to close for the day following what he called "scary" security reports. Some customers were, however, lucky to conduct their transactions using their ATM cards.Mrs Adeogun Titilayo, who claimed to have travelled from Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State to Ibadan to conduct a business transaction, told NAN that she was devastated by the development.Another customer, who claimed to be a student, Risikat Bamidele, said she was at the bank to collect her ATM card, which would have enabled her make withdrawals from her account. She urged the banks to promptly work with security agencies, adding that the development was taking a toll on bank customers.Apparently to give residents a sense of security, a detachment of heavily armed policemen in Armoured Personnel Carriers patrolled around the Challenge area at about 10.35 a.m., blaring sirens.
