Fire razes Makurdi market

Published by Tribune on Fri, 09 Dec 2011

AN early hour inferno, on Thursday, destroyed property worth several millions of naira when the administrative and executive shops at the Makurdi modern market was engulfed by the fire. The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the fire started about 1.00 a.m and lasted for over two hours. As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the inferno was unknown, as some people, however, attributed it to power outage while others claimed that it was an act of sabotage as there was no power supply to the market days before the incident.Offices belonging to Benue Internal Revenue Services (BIRS), NIPOST security office, multi-purpose co-operative as well as the traders' union office were affected.Speaking with newsmen, the acting manager of the market, Mr Kurum Francis, expressed shock at the incident, saying that they were alerted by villagers about the fire.Mr Francis said the extent of damage was yet to be ascertained but ruled out any form of sabotage.A trader and wife of the late Secretary to Benue State government, Mrs Ladi Achigili, who was in tears, said she lost wares, including clothes, gift items and jewelries worth over N5 million.Special Assistant to Governor Suswam on Public Utilities, Mr Gaddafi Asemanya, frowned on the incident and submitted that it was a calculated attempt by some people to discredit the administration and appealed to traders whose wares were destroyed to value their loss and await government's response.
