Lagos seeks collaboration with traditional rulers

The Lagos Stategovernment hassaid it would welcome stronger collaboration with traditional rulers in the state in its bid to bring more development to residents of the metropolis.Mr Ademorin Kuye, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, spoke in Ikeja while presenting eight new cars to first class Obas and white cap chiefs across the state.It was reported that the beneficiaries of the cars were Ojomu of Ajiyan, Ovori of Ibeshe, Olojo of Ojo, Oba of Ilashe, Oba of Ketu, Suenu of Lagos, Sasore of Lagos and Ojon of Lagos.Kuye said the traditional institutions had played significant roles in some of the achievements made in the Lagos Megacity Project, saying improved partnership would bring about greater development.The commissioner urged the traditional rulers to support the government more in the area of security of lives and property in their areas.``The traditional rulers are an important channel of communication between the government and the people. We, therefore, appeal to you to use your influence and education more to sell government policies and programmes to your people.``We also look up to you to help the government in encouraging your people on the need to fulfil their civic responsibilities such as payment of taxes and rates promptly, to pave the way for rapid development, `` he added.Kuye said the presentation of the cars was a further demonstration of the government`s commitment to improving the welfare of traditional rulers and also to recognise their roles as agents of development.One of the beneficiaries of the cars , Oba Rufai Galip, the Olojo of Ojo, thanked the state government for the gesture, saying the cars would further enhance the performance of their traditional responsibilities.
