Eket Stadium agog, as Mobil Schools Athletics Championship ends this weekend

Published by Guardian on Fri, 09 Dec 2011

AFTER one full year of trials, eliminations and zonal qualification hurdles, all roads will this weekend lead to the Eket Stadium where the grand finale of the AKS/NNPC/Mobil Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, now in its 11th year, will be concluded. The over 560 students to participate in the 12 listed sports for boys and girls have already arrived in Eket and are expected to move into the QIC Secondary School athletes camp if found eligible to participate in the championship after the screening exercise. The heats will commence today in all the sports, while the finals of such events as javelin (girls) and shot putt (boys and girls) will be concluded. The highlight of this year's competition will be the weight of expectations hanging on the shoulder of Enobong Aniefiok, the Etinan Zonal champion, who won four gold and a silver medal in the zonal finals. However, chairman of the state chapter of the National Athletics Technical Officials, Utit Ofon Nkantah, was to punctuate this enthusiasm when she said that on getting to Eket, Aniefiok would not have the opportunity of repeating her feat because of the timing of the various events.'At the zone she was lucky to come first in 100 and 200 metres, discuss and long jump. In Eket she will not have that luxury as two or more of her events will definitely be going on at the same time,' Nkantah said.
