Reps committee deplores condition of army barracks in Kaduna

MEMBERS of the House of Representatives Committee on Army, Direct Labour and States of Nigerian Army Barracks, yesterday lamented the dilapidated condition of houses accommodating junior officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna.The Army barracks visited by the committee members who were on oversight function of Army projects across the North West zone included Ribadu Cantonment and Dalets Barracks.The legislators were almost moved to tears when they visited the Ribadu Cantonment which condition has deteriorated and has acute water problem.The committee members were led on the inspection tour by the Commander, 41 Division Engineers, Kaduna, Brigadier-General Osamudiamen Osemwota.Besides, other Army projects visited by the committee include 44 reference hospitals, Army Central Workshop which was abandoned in 1979 but is now undergoing rehabilitation, Jaji Electrical Shooting Range,boys quarters converted to officers' transit accommodation, as well as the Infantry Corps Centre (ICC), Jaji.Fielding questions from journalists at the end of the inspection tour, the Committee Chairman, Alhaji Mukhtar Aliyu expressed dissatisfaction at the poor state ofthe Army barracks, saying: 'You expect soldiers to be loyal and dedicated to duty in this terrible accommodation that is not too fit for habitation.
