Gas shortage stalls generation of 1,000MW

Published by Punch on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State on Friday said gas shortage was hindering the National Independent Power Project from generating about 1,000MW from its various plants across the country. He said the problem was compounded by some communities that had been destroying gas pipelines. Uduaghan spoke with State House correspondents after the 20th board meeting of the NIPP presided over by its chairman, Vice-President Namadi Sambo. He said the board was told that many of the stations were about to be completed, while some were actually ready. He explained that it was at the point of completion that they discovered that they had challenges in form of gas supply and transmission after production. Irked by the behaviour of communities that were disrupting operations, the board had agreed that a meeting of some stakeholders should hold in Asaba on Monday, Uduaghan said. Those expected to attend the meeting, according to him, are representatives of the Delta State Government, the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and some communities. He said the meeting was aimed at finding a lasting solution to the destruction of the pipelines transmitting gas. This, he said, became imperative because the actions were not just affecting the plants being managed by the NIPP, but also the ones being managed by the Ministry of power itself. He said, "There is about 1,000MW that cannot be generated because we do not have enough gas in our various plants across the country and this is because of the disruption in gas supply."
