Obasanjo left legacy of corruption, electoral fraud 'Tinubu

Published by Punch on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Friday lambasted former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying the he left the "worst legacy of electoral practice in Nigeria." Tinubu told journalists at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, that Obasanjo should "retire in shame politically." The Action Congress of Nigeria leader was reacting to comments reportedly made by Obasanjo over ACNs allegation of scientific rigging in Kogi State by the Peoples Democratic Party. Tinubu said, "What integrity has Obasanjo in terms of the legacy he has for Nigeria to speak on elections' The only election that was clear in this country was when we started the Fourth Republic. "Every one of us knows that. They got rid of Abel Guobadia, Iwu. The worst legacy in electoral practice was led by Obasanjo. "He has no reason whatsoever and he has no audacity to talk about free and fair election in this country apart from his aborted third term election. "He brought about and left a legacy of electoral corruption in the country to the extent that his successor had to set up the Justice Mohamemd Uwais panel, but instead of implementing Uwais report comprehensively and improve on the elections, they stage-managed and side-tracked that report. They implemented only one or two items. "What is Obasanjo talking about' He should go away and retire in shame politically because he brought a whole salad of corruption, manipulation and failure." Tinubu said his party would contest PDPs victory in Kogi State in court. "We are going to do so (contest PDPs victory in Kogi State in court). Until Nigeria has a free and fair election, we will not be at peace in this country and we will not build the nation. That is the truth," he added. The former governor accused the ex-President of poorly handling privatisation, electricity and petroleum matters during his administration. Tinubu said Obasanjo had no moral grounds to comment on any national issue, and as such, should retire to his farm. He accused the former President of violating the constitution with the manner he handled some national issues. He said, "He has no audacity to talk about the local government election, is it the local government that he didnt believe in its creation' Is it the local government that he withheld the funding and other related constitutional compliance' "Did he ever believe in a free and fair election' He should not be talking in this country. He should cover his face, go to his farm and milk his cows and attend to the chickens. "What legacy has Obasanjo left for this country' Look at the petroleum issue, I can show you papers on this when we started discussions on the petroleum subsidy. What did he do' He left that problem. What has he done on electricity' He left that legacy of failure till now. What has he done in the privatisation' He left a litany of corruption." Efforts to get Obasanjos reaction to Tinubus comments were abortive as all his telephone lines were inaccessible on Friday night.Neither did his aide respond to a text message sent to his cell-phone by our correspondent.
