Gallup Poll begins opinion polls on fuel subsidy removal

Published by Tribune on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

IN line with the Nigeria LabourCongress's (NLC's) call for a referendum on the removal or otherwise of fuel subsidy, Gallop Polls Nigeria Limited has begun the collation of opinions of Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, on their positions on the planned removal of fuel subsidy. The opinion poll began on Thursday with a call to all Nigerians, wherever they live, to send their opinions in support or against the planned removal of fuel subsidy through an SMS to 33812 on five GSM network services, which include MTN, Glo, Airtel, and Etisalat.Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, the Principal Consultant to Gallop Polls Nigeria Ltd, Chief Tony Chigbo, said in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan and his campaign pledge to involve Nigerians on issues of national discourse, the company opened the door to voiceless Nigerians to air their views on the government's planned removal of the fuel subsidy. He said: 'The debate for and against the government's planned removal of fuel subsidy in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry has been raging between proponents and opponents of the planned policy. Both camps are armed with unhindered access to the print and electronic media. Both have budgets and allocated resources to push through their views, leaving the majority that voted in the April elections in the dark.
